China Open Players Tournament 3rd – 11th May 2008

Celebrating their graduation, our newest polo players having just completed the now famous 10 Session Accelerated Polo Course, combined with a handful of international players, a smattering of spectators, polo enthusiasts and stick chicks to make the China Player’s Tournament a roaring success.

Polo players came from Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Beijing to participate in the 2 weekend tournament that involved 4 teams of beginners and experienced players mixed together in teams. The Green Frogs (Wayne Glennie, Eric Li, Mah ___, Shi Lai) won the Gold Cup against the Red Dragons (Steve Wyatt, Stan Vukmer, Gerry Gan and Dino Asvaintra). Polo Club Chairman Steve Wyatt was in fine form, scoring 9 of the goals (only usurped in goal count by Tom Claytor who scored 16 goals).

Third place were taken out by the Purple Pandas (Brian Xu, Churo, Stijn Welkers, Leon Chu, Su Rong) and fourth by the Pink Panthers (Tom Claytor, Scott Stevens, Gene Wang, Luca Frontini and our Federico).

The second day of matches was challenged by the rain, but nothing could dampen the competitive spirit of the players who waited impatiently for the rain to clear. With much relief it was decided, rain hail or shine, the show must go on and all agreed to play with caution in the rain, more slowly to avoid injuring the horses and ruining the new grass on the field. Afterall we have Chinas only 2 full sized polo fields in our estate!

We forged ahead and the two-weekend tournament continued with-out a hitch. A fun time was had by all the players with the late afternoons ending in champagne fuelled conversations about game tactics. Every year we plan to hold the May Players Tournament, developing this celebration tournament into an annual institution.
