Polo

Polo is the oldest team sport in the world and still regarded as the ultimate sport, It is a unique sport combining speed of insight and execution, strength and confidence, the skill of the individual and the coordination of the team; so perhaps it is no wonder that the sport draws to it those who are successful and competitive in other areas of their lives. Polo has its origins in the camps of the Army, where cavalry officers would develop their riding skills and team coordination whilst keeping themselves and their horses in top physical condition. The Chinese played an early form of Polo in about 600 BC, over the centuries, the game became further refined and eventually the rules of the modern game were recorded by British Army Officers who determined that the game should remain true to it’s origins as the game of Kings and the King of games. Speed, stamina, precision, excitement and a glorious tradition, this defines the game of polo. Modern polo is played on grass, a full size field being 275 meters (300 yards) long and 140 meters (160 yards). Two teams of four players mounted on horses compete to put a hard ball (approximately 9cm in diameter) through goal posts at the opposite end of the field. The teams change ends after each goal scored to ensure that there is no advantage in the slope of the field, the direction of the wind or the angle of the sun. A complete polo match consists of either 6 periods (called chukkas) each of 7 minutes playing time. The play is usually so intense that players normally require fresh horses after each chukka.
